Reinforcement steel

The principles applied to the design of buildings and engineering structures,  also in terms of reinforcement steel, are currently regulated by standards PN-EN-1992-1-1 (EUROKODU 2). Eurokod 2 replaced the standard PN-B-03264:2002. Steel classification (A-0, A-I, A-II, A-III, AIIIN) applied so far has lost its’ importance, meanwhile yield strength (fyk) and toughness (A, B, C) have become more important. A change of regulations caused abandoning production of many types of steel (among others 34GS, 18G2-b, St0S-b) and replacing them with new, also imported steel.

The condition of steel fusibility is expressed by carbon equivalent Ceq. Minimal value expressing fusibility equals 0,5 %. [2]

As per Eurocode 2 on the documentation, instead of using the concept of steel class one should specify its’ specific characteristics, such as:

  • characteristic yield strength fyk,
  • toughness class (A, B or C),
  • fusibility (if there is such a need),
  • suitability for the use for constructions under variable loads.
